Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
The cornerstone of the credit union movement is a focus on creating equitable and inclusive communities for all. As not-for-profit financial cooperatives, credit unions were created to offer equitable financial services in their community, especially to those who have been overlooked and underserved.
Kinecta Diversity Council
Kinecta is dedicated to promoting a diverse, inclusive and equitable environment for our employees, members and the communities we serve. The Diversity Council was formed in 2020 by a cross-section of employees who meet regularly to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) goals at Kinecta, with the support of an executive sponsor.
The Council’s vision is to recognize, advocate and foster a culture of diversity, equality and inclusion across our organization that is equitable for our employees and the communities we serve.
Employee Resource Groups
The Council supports Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), where individuals with similar interests, identities and life experiences—such as race, gender and sexuality—can connect. These groups raise awareness and give a voice to the underrepresented, allowing employees to network and socialize, as well as work on their professional development.
LGBTQ+ Support
The Council is committed to creating a safe space for its LGBTQ+ employees. Through the formation of its LGBTQ+ ERG; partnering with local organizations such as PFLAG Southbay; participating in various events, such as the Hermosa Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Long Beach Pride Parade, and PFLAG Southbay Picnic; sponsoring events and hosting panels with CU Pride; and hosting lunch and learns on topics important to the LGBTQ+ community, the Council aims to create awareness and educate others on topics that affect the LGBTQ+ community.
Partners
Spicy Green Book
The Council works with Spicy Green Book (SGB) to empower black-owned food and drink businesses to thrive in the marketplace. SGB provides free professional services to entrepreneurs in the community, including online marketing and advertising, content creation, photography and videography, and business development education.
Covenant House
The Council’s partnership with Covenant House helps support young adults facing homelessness, 40% of whom are from the LGBTQIA+ community. Covenant House provides a safe haven for 18- to 24-year-olds, putting them on a path to independence and transforming their lives.
The Council is currently sponsoring a Financial Literacy Series, setting up youth who complete the program with a $500 savings account.
Operation Progress
The Council partnered with Operation Progress to bring financial education to students born into underserved communities. The Council provided these scholars with education sessions focused on preparing them to go to college with the financial awareness to make responsible choices, ensuring future success. A $10,000 scholarship was also provided to one student pursuing their higher education.
Green Dot
Green Dot Public Schools is a network of public charter schools throughout California and Tennessee whose goal is to help transform public education and assist students in historically underserved communities. Together, the Council and Green Dot are providing equitable access to personal finance education, equipping these students with financial literacy courses, tools and real-life experiences to succeed.
