Protect Your Personal Data

Credit and debit card fraud involves the unauthorized use of another person's card information to make purchases from their account or access their funds.

Card fraud occurs through a variety of channels, including card skimming, online scams, data breaches and card or mail theft.

Skimming is a method fraudsters use to steal your card information, recreate your card and perform fraudulent transactions on your account. Criminals attach devices onto ATM machines in order to copy the ATM/Debit card number, the information encoded on the magnetic strip and even the Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Tips to Protect Yourself

  • Shield your PIN with your hand. Hidden cameras are disguised so they can pick up your PIN. By protecting it, thieves cannot access your account. And NEVER write down your PIN; memorize it. Do not share your PIN with anyone.
  • Check the keypad. Some criminals use keypad overlays instead of cameras to capture PINs. These devices record keystrokes electronically, so check for anything that seems to have been placed over the top of the keypad that moves, seems unusual, or does not match the ATM.
  • Use familiar ATMs and limit your visits. ATMs in dimly lighted spots or used late at night could be more susceptible to fraud, while ATMs under video surveillance can be safer. ATMs inside a financial institution are less likely a target for scammers. Be wary of anyone loitering by machines, especially when using an ATM, and don't let strangers help you with supposedly "broken" machines.
  • Check your account balances frequently. By closely monitoring your account activity, you can quickly detect any unauthorized transactions and report it to the Credit Union quickly.
  • Inspect the ATM before use. Make sure the card slot has not been tampered with; that it is legitimate and not taped on. If anything looks suspicious, unusual or out of place, do not use the ATM.
  • Always keep your cards in a secure location. Cards are often stolen from unsecure locations such as unlocked vehicles or in unattended locations at work.
  • Use caution when making online purchases. Use your card on reputable, secure websites. Never give your card number over the phone unless you are dealing with a reputable company in which you have initiated the call or the order. If you've never done business with the company, do an online search first for reviews or complaints.
  • Traveling. If you will be traveling with your card(s) notify the Credit Union of your travel dates and location.
