Spoofing Scams on the Rise

Woman stares at phone concerned with coffee in hand.

Kinecta is committed to protecting your account and keeping your information secure. However, many criminals target consumers directly when trying to gain access to their accounts, tricking them into providing information they can use to access their accounts.

One common tactic is spoofing. Spoofing occurs when the caller deliberately disguises their true phone number and makes the number displayed on your caller ID appear as if the call originates from a legitimate source. Scammers may impersonate your financial institution, a government agency or other trusted contact.

Here’s how it works:

The scammer may claim to alert you to “suspicious activity” on your account and tell you that you must provide additional information, such as digital banking usernames and passwords, debit card numbers, SSN, PIN, one-time access codes or other account details, to correct or refuse a charge.

The scammer's intent is to trick you into providing personal information that will then be used in fraudulent activity and unauthorized transactions.

What you can do:
  • Don’t rely on caller ID. Verify suspicious calls by hanging up and calling the organization they are representing directly. Look up the organization’s website to find their phone number — do not use any contact information provided to you by the caller.
  • Don’t share private account information. Remember, Kinecta employees will never call and ask for your PIN, digital banking password or one-time access codes. This information should always be private and never shared.
  • Regularly review account activity. Be alert to unauthorized transactions — even small dollar amounts — and report any suspicious or erroneous transactions.
  • Report any scamming attempts to your financial institution. Contact us immediately if you suspect your account is compromised or to report any attempts.

Use Kinecta’s tools to prevent fraud:

With Kinecta, there are several ways you can further protect yourself from potential identity theft, unauthorized activity and account takeover fraud scams.
  • Periodically review your recent login activity in digital banking by navigating to your Profile under Tools and Settings.
  • Under Card Management in digital banking, you can place a temporary block on your debit or credit card.
  • Enable two-factor authentication in digital banking under Tools and Settings, and Security.
  • With Kinecta’s mobile app, you can enable push notifications so you are instantly alerted to account activity (navigate to Settings under Tools and select Alerts).
  • Start tracking your credit score and access your full credit report in digital banking. Regularly monitoring your report helps identify any ID theft quickly.
  • Book an appointment with a Kinecta representative to review what security features are available to be enabled. Request to add a verbal password to your account.

Remember, Kinecta will never contact you to ask for secure information. If you believe your Kinecta account has been compromised, please contact us immediately at 800.854.9846.
